Digital Technologies Teacher PD – Serious Game Creation- USC Fraser Coast

Learn how to develop students’ growth mindset, and develop your own confidence and skills in teaching about STEM careers and curriculum!

About this event

The Make, Integrate, Explore (MIE) Lab provides opportunities for school students, teachers, parents and the community to learn and engage in STEM activities and experiences.

Learn how to teach your students how to create a Serious Game using Scratch.

This professional development will focus on serious game design and no prior knowledge or training is necessary – we give you all the skills you need!

The learning focuses on developing a growth mindset in your students and is linked to the curriculum in Science, Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies. The cost for this PD is $20 for teachers and is free for USC pre-service teachers and a light afternoon tea will be arranged. Please note that the starting time of 3pm applies to pre-service teachers who are invited to join us for a talk about our program, what we do and how to get involved. Teachers from schools are welcome to attend the PD from 4pm – 6pm.

 

About Scratch PD

In our Year 4 sequence of lessons, students design and program a serious game in Scratch, to educate others about how living things depend on each other and the environment to survive. The learning focuses on growth mindset and perseverance and is linked to the curriculum in Science, Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies.

 

What will I learn?

• Practical experience and confidence delivering STEM lessons in schools

• How to design and code serious games using Scratch

• How to use serious games as an educational tool in a classroom setting

• To motivate school students to have positive attitudes toward higher education

 

Your commitment

• One 2-hour face to face training session at USC Fraser Coast (3 hours for pre-service teachers), room B206.1

 

What do I need to bring?

• Laptop – (prior to this event please download the Scratch app here: https://scratch.mit.edu/download)

 

This session provides you the opportunity to learn more about our program and what we do in the community. Develop your own confidence and skills in a classroom teaching Digital Technologies as well and as educating yourself and your students about STEM career opportunities!

MIE Lab project is supporting the Crystallising STEM Careers project funded by a National Careers Institute Partnerships grant.
