Year 7

Self-driving car

In this sequence of lessons, students will explore the social, ethical and environmental considerations required in the creation of self-driving cars and design and program a self-driving car using an Arduino.

This learning is linked to the Science, Digital Technologies and Design and Technologies curriculum.

The Year 7 lessons and resources provide students with opportunities to learn how to program an Arduino, develop their computational thinking skills and deepen their understanding of STEM careers.

The program is designed so that some of the lessons are presented by the classroom teacher and others are presented by MIE School presenters who visit the school. There are 7 x 70min lessons for this program:

Lesson one: Road Safety (70 mins) – delivered by the classroom teacher
Lesson two: Elements of a Self-driving Car (70 mins) – delivered by the classroom teacher
Lesson three: Circuits and Arduino (70 mins)- delivered by MIE School presenters
Lesson four: Motor Control Board (70 mins)- delivered by MIE School presenters
Lesson five: Ultra-sonic Sensor (70 mins)- delivered by MIE School presenters
Lesson six: Logic Explained (70 mins) – delivered by MIE School presenters
Lesson seven: 70mins to finalise the cars – delivered by MIE school presenters

This additional lesson is to finalise the programming of the self-driving car and test drive the vehicles.

Design and Technologies Project

The classroom teacher can choose to deliver the final 5 lessons which are focussed on meeting outcomes from the Design and Technologies curriculum.

Design brief: Design and program a self-driving car using an Arduino which considers ethical, social and sustainability issues and can sense the road, map the road and negotiate its place on the road.

Producing and implementing (1 day, on campus at USC)

Students bring their production plan to the university and work with university students to produce and implement their design and program their self-driving car.

Evaluating

Presenting (1 day, on campus at USC)

Students create a presentation on the self-driving car their group produced in lesson 9. Students are provided with the opportunity to describe their design and programming ideas to an expert panel who will provide them with feedback on their design solution.
